Mixed results for Nepali chess squad

KATHMANDU, June 7: FIDE Master Manish Hamal started with a winning note in the opening day of the First International Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament held in Orissa, India.



Hamal defeated unrated Vishnu Charan Sahoo of India to open his scoring with one point. Likewise, Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali beat Mohanty Sashwat of India. Bilam Lal Shrestha beat India´s unrated Nishit Mohanty. Vagawati Prasad Sharma downed Subhashree Pridarshan. Niraj Niraula defeated unrated Shrinath Bhai. Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha and Prem Krishna Maharjan got a point each without playing the game after their opponent did not participate in the match.



Olympian Balaram Napit, Gyanendra Prasad Shrestha, Mani Raj Dangi, Umesh KC and Indra Kumar Basnet suffered losses in the first round match.



The 2nd and 3rd round matches will be held Monday.
