KATHMANDU, May 10: For photography enthusiasts, photo.circle is organizing a 14-week long masterclass with award winning Danish photographer Mads Nissen to enable participants to become better at telling visual stories.

The workshop is intended for advanced photographers and photojournalists interested in storytelling through images. [break]

The workshop is taking place from June 12 to September 9, at photo.circle headquarters, Arun Thapa Chowk, Jhamsikhel.

“We have been organizing various workshops before but this time it is different as it’s not the usual short-term program but a four-week-long workshop where participants will be working over a period of time and will get inputs accordingly,” put in Nayantara Gurung Kakshapati, co- founder of photo.circle.

She further said that after the first session, photographers will be staying in touch with the instructors and later produce an in-depth story each.

“The workshop has been designed for advanced photographers and photo journalists who are committed as we don’t want people to dropout in the middle,” she shares.

Kakshapati said that the selection of participants will be done by photo.circle along with Danish photographer, Mads Nissen.

“The workshop will also have participants working with the writers so it will help to enhance their narrative photography skills, writing skills and storytelling skills at large,” kakshapati further elaborated.

Participants will use photojournalism and documentary photography to discover, investigate and convey stories about places and people.

Stories can both be big or small. By analyzing picture stories, looking at their structure, discussing journalism behind it, participants will find out how visual language can be used to narrate their specific stories.

Participants will work on a story each, on a given theme over a 14-week time period.

The participation fee is Rs 10,000 and each participant will be given a small grant to cover travel and other related expenses while producing their stories. The works produced will be exhibited and published while the photographers will retain all copyrights.

Photo.circle reserves the right to publish, exhibit and distribute produced works for promotional purposes.

The masterclass will cater to 12 participants and the application is open to Nepali citizens only. Interested participants have to submit a portfolio which should include a minimum of one to a maximum of three picture stories (each story should have minimum eight pictures, maximum 20, all 800 pixels on the widest side, 72 dpi).

All pictures should have captions in file info. Files should be named as follows: Photographers name_story title_01.jpg.

Each participant should also write a personal statement of minimum 300 to a maximum of 1000 words, that mentions a little bit about a person’s background and why he/she is motivated to participate in this master class and how he/she plans time to work on their story.

Mads Nissen is an award-winning Danish photojournalist. Most recently, he won a World Press Award for his story ‘In the Name of Victoria’ which he shot in Nepal.

Applications should be emailed to leaning@photocircle.com.np. The application deadline is May 15, 5 pm. For more information log on to photocircle.com.np.
