At least three killed, dozens missing as massive landslide sweeps away nine houses in Sindhupalchowk

KATHMANDU, Sept 13: At least three people were killed and over two dozen others were left missing as a massive landslide washed away at least nine houses in Bhirkharka area of Barhabise Rural Municipality-7 in Sindhupalchowk district Saturday night.

According to Nim Phinjo Sherpa, chairman of Barhabise Rural Municipality, around 20 to 25 people are missing as nine houses in the area were swept away by the landslide. 

Exact details of the losses are yet to be determined. "We have received information that nine houses have been destroyed," Sherpa told Republica over the phone. "We fear that 20 to 25 people are missing. We are yet to receive the exact details of the losses."

Sherpa said he is currently on his way to the incident site. A  team of Nepal Army (NA) personnel have already reached the area for search and rescue operation, and Nepal Police personnel are also expected to reach there shortly.

249 people have died in landslides and 49 are missing since the Monsoon season started earlier this year.
