Market inspectors seal Unique Fast Food Cafe

KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Market inspection officials on Friday sealed Unique Fast Food Café, Anamnagar after they found the eatery preparing food in unhygienic environment and using date expired, unlabeled and rotten products.



The anomaly came to light when a joint inspection team of Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and Department of Commerce and Supply Management (DoCSM) on the day inspected the restaurant´s kitchen based on consumers´ complaints.[break]



“We inspected the restaurant´s kitchen after a consumer filed complaint with us, saying that he found a matchstick in food served by it,” Madan Kumar Chapagain, food research officer at DFTQC, said.



During the inspection, the monitoring team found 40 kg of rotten chicken and decaying minced chicken and vegetables. It was also found using substandard sauce, expired and unlabelled spices and water jars.



The team took the food samples for lab test and destroyed rotten and substandard products.



“We have asked Raju Shrestha, manager of the café, to be present at DFTQC for further clarification and directed the café management to correct mistakes and maintain good hygiene at the earliest,” Chapagain said, adding: “We will give permission to reopen the café only after our instructions are implemented.”



Earlier, DFTQC had warned the café management for not maintaining good hygiene.



Similarly, the DoCSM also inspected food at Ramdev Parik and Yeti Mini Mart at Battisputali, Riddhi Siddhi Stores and Saksham Stores at Maitidevi, Santoshi Khadhya Stores at Gaushala and Sandip Stores at Singhadurbar.



Prem Prasad Paudel, director of DoCSM, said they found Ram Dev Parik of hoarding rice, flour and sugar and Santoshi Stores operating without business registration certificate. Similarly, owners of Yeti Mini Market, Sandip Stores and Saksham Stores had not renewed their business registration certificates.



The stores were also not displaying price list of products.
