In the meeting held at the Prime Minister´s Office in Singha Durbar, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal stated that the UML would support the Maoists´ candidate for CC chair if the Maoist joined the government, stopped disrupting House proceedings and facilitated the functioning of the committee to integrate and rehabilitate Maoist combatants. The Maoists, however, turned down the UML´s proposal.
Talking to mediapersons, Unified CPN-Maoist parliamentary party´s deputy leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha alleged that the UML wanted to forward their political agenda in turn for the post of CC chair. Shrestha also criticized the UML for its failure to play a pro-active role in negotiating the deal.
NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel said that the prime minister tried to find middle path to settle the CC chair row. However, the issue could not be settled as the Maoists rejected the prime minister´s offer, Poudel claimed. The election for the CC chair is scheduled to be held on Friday.
While the Maoists have already forwarded Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai´s candidacy for the CC Chair, the NC is yet to name its candidate. It is now almost certain that the election for CC chair will be held on Tuesday if the parties failed to reach consensus on Thursday.
NC Vice President Poudel said that they will hold a meeting to pick the party´s candidate for the CC chair on Thursday morning.
