KATHMANDU, Sept 9: The Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) on Thursday sent a letter to United Nations (UN) regarding their disagreement on the letter sent by the government on UNMIN term extension.

According to Maoist vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha, they disagree with the government’s approach to send a letter without consulting Maoists. The party sent the letter through UNMIN.[break]

“We want UNMIN with same mandate for next six months,” Shrestha said after a Maoist meeting at Naya Bazaar, the residence of chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The government has only asked for four-month extension.

UNMIN is facilitating Nepal’s peace process supervising Nepal Army and Maoist’s People’s Liberation Army after UCPN (Maoist) joined the mainstream politics ending an armed conflict. UNMIN was established in January, 2007 at the requests of the government and Maoist.

Meanwhile, the ambassadors of United Kingdom, USA and acting ambassador of France held a meeting with Maoist leaders including Dahal regarding the term extension of UNMIN.

After the meeting, they urged the political parties to sort out the differences and reach a consensus on UNMIN matters.

“They expressed their concerns on peace process,” Shrestha said.

Similarly, the Maoist leaders are meeting Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Thursday afternoon to discuss the issue. Shrestha hoped that during the meeting, the Maoist and government can agree for another letter.

In its letter sent to the UN Secretary-General, the caretaker government has removed the provision on monitoring of a limited number of NA personnel and their weapons by UNMIN as mentioned in the current mandate.

The number of NA personnel and their weapons being monitored by UNMIN is equal to the number of Maoist combatants cantoned in the seven cantonments and 21 satellite camps.
