Maoists obstructing House to seize state: NC

KATHMANDU, May 6: The Nepali Congress has termed the Maoist obstruction of parliament as part of their strategy to capture power through all possible means.

"What a ridiculous thing is this when the prime minister steps down but his party prevents the speaker from reading out information about his resignation in the parliament which elected him?" said Nepali Congress Chief Whip Laxman Prasad Ghimire.

Ghimire was talking to media after the parliament meeting was postponed without even entering into its agenda. The speaker was supposed to read out a letter from the president´s office to inform lawmakers about the prime minister´s resignation and ask parliament to elect a new prime minister.

Because of the protest by Maoists, the parliamentary business advisory committee also failed to meet. The meeting was supposed to discuss the election schedule for the new prime minister.

Maoist leaders said they would not allow parliament to start the process of electing another prime minister until the issue of civilian supremacy over the army is settled. They claimed that formation of a new government without correcting the president´s move to reinstate army chief Rookmangud Katawal was not possible. "A government formed without settling the dispute will be under military dominance," said Maoist party deputy leader in parliament Narayan Kaji Shrestha.
