KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Senior Nepali Congress (NC) leader Sher Bahadur Deuba on Thursday said that the Maoists´ activities were pushing the country toward ethnic and regional conflicts.

Addressing a function organized to mark 34th National Reconciliation Day at the NC headquarters in Sanepa, Deuba said that by obstructing the peace process the Maoists are leading the country toward total anarchy. He claimed that the Maoists´ obstruction also hindered the process of management of their army. Deuba also claimed that the Maoist´s declaration of autonomous states along ethnic and geographical lines would incite fresh conflict in the country.

On the occasion, NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel said that the management of the Maoist combatants is necessary to take the ongoing peace process to a logical end.

The then NC President B P Koirala had returned Nepal ending his eight year self-exiled life in India on Poush 16, 1976 as part of his policy of national reconciliation. Since then, the NC has been observing the day as National Reconciliation Day every year.

NC Vice President Prakash Man Singh, Joint General Secretary Arjun Nara Singh KC and other leaders had underscored the need to uphold the policy of national reconciliation to bail the country out of the current stalemate.
