KATHMANDU, April 20: The Maoists are scheduled for a crucial meeting of the party´s politburo from Wednesday to chart out the party´s strategy amidst the tightening deadline for constitution drafting and deepening intra-party crisis.

The meeting is likely to see heated debates over the party´ next strategy, and would also discuss the allocation of ministerial portfolios in the current coalition.[break]

According to party leaders, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal would present an analysis of the current political situation and the possible scenario post May 28 and propose appropriate party measures.

"The party would forge new programs based on the political line endorsed after the Palungtar plenum," said Haribol Gajurel, who is close to Dahal.

Party insiders say Dahal is likely to make proposal for the conclusion of the peace process and constitution drafting, while maintaining that the party still upholds the policy to launch urban insurrection, the political line endorsed by a majority vote by the Central Committee (CC) after the Palungtar plenum.

The Maoist hard-line faction led by Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya has pushed for a ´people´s revolt´ for a ´people´s constitution´ while another faction led by Dr Baburam Bhattarai is for the completion of the peace process and constitution drafting through compromises.

"We would push for peace and constitution while launching struggle from the streets," Gajurel said.

Attempts are also being made to reconcile Bhattarai and Dahal who are ideologically close. Party leaders Barshaman Pun and Janardan Sharma are taking such initiative.

With the CA´s deadline coming closer by the day, Dahal is hard-pressed to choose between peace and revolt.

"There is no option to concluding the peace process and constitution drafting," Bhattarai told Republica adding that the politburo meeting would further clarify that point.

But the Baidya faction remains adamant over implementing the party line to revolt. "It is just a rumor that the party would change the official line. It is in fact a conspiracy hatched by domestic and international reactionaries," said Maoist leader Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma.

If Dahal´s document proposes changing the party line, the hard-line faction is likely to demand a CC meeting.

"Any proposal to change the current line must be discussed at the CC," said a leader close to Baidya faction.

The leaders close to three factions were busy discussing their strategy for the politburo meeting. Leaders close to Dahal faction met at the latter´s residence at Naya Baazar, those close to Bhattarai at Sanepa and those close to Baidya at Gangabu.
