Bhakta Bahadur Rumba, 35, of Phaparbari-5 in Makwanpur distrcit, killed his daughters Anita, 4, Sunita, 6 and Laxmi, 11, on Thursday night. [break]
Bhakta first killed his eldest daughter Laxmi by hitting her head with a stone. Laxmi was asleep when she was smashed on her head. When Laxmi started crying, Anita and Sunita woke up. Bhakta killed them as well.
Sunita was grade one student at Balbikash Primary School while Laxmi was a fifth grader at Chauraha Lower Secondary School.
Bhakta’s wife Aashmaya and eldest son were out of their house to watch Ratyauli, a traditional dance performed during wedding ceremonies, in the neighborhood when the three were murdered. Bhakta’s father Sanokanchha Rumba was also outside the house when the incident took place.
“There is no other house in the vicinity,” said police inspector Kushal Kumar Basnet, who reached the incident site. “This is why no one heard the children cry.”
Bhakta had covered his three daughters’ bodies with a blanket. Bhakta’s crime was exposed only when Aashmaya returned home late Thursday night.
When she saw her three daughters’ dead bodies, a terrified Aashmaya cried for help. Local villagers who gathered at Bhakta’s house tied him. He was later handed over to the police by locals. Villagers told the police that Bhakta was mentally-ill. “I do not know what happened to me. I just felt like killing them,” Bhakta later told the police. However, he has not shown signs of mental illness in police custody.
The horrendous incident has shocked the whole village. Aashmaya has been crying ever since.
