KATHMANDU, March 21: CPN-UML lawmakers have pressed the party leadership to make their position clear on some of the thorny issues dogging the constitution writing and take strong measures to ensure that the peace process and constitution writing gets completed before May 27.

The lawmakers, who have launched a campaign to press the political leadership to conclude constitution writing and peace process before expiry of the renewed tenure of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on May 27, talked to party Chairman Jhalanath Khanal and other standing committee members asking them to end indecisiveness on the crucial issues such as the system of governance, state restructuring and judicial system, among others.[break]

“The leaders committed before us that they would seriously work toward that end,” said Yamlal Kandel, who heads a 17-member secretariat formed by UML lawmakers to spearhead the campaign.

He said that they told UML leaders that the pressure group would launch a public campaign if the latter fail to make tangible progress within a couple of days. Kandel, however, didn´t elaborate on the nature of such a public campaign.

Party Chairman Khanal, former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, party Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam, General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel, the party´s three secretaries, among other standing committee members, were present at the party office to listen to the lawmakers´ concern.

A group of around 18 lawmakers, including Ramnath Dhakal, Rabindra Adhikari, Rijwan Ansari and Krishna Prasad Sapkota, among others, led by Kandel had reached the party office.

The pressure group held a joint meeting with lawmakers from other political parties including the UCPN (Maoist) and the Nepali Congress (NC) Tuesday with a plan to launch a joint movement.
