KATHMANDU, Aug 6: General Secretary of CPN (Marxist-Leninist) CP Mainali has accused the UCPN (Maoist) of engineering a split in his party by offering hefty amount of money to his party members and luring them with positions in the new government.

Some of the leaders, including four of the eight lawmakers from the party, announced that they split the party to form new CPN (ML-Socialist) party just hours before the voting to elect new prime minister in parliament on Friday. [break]

“Maoist leaders are the main architects of this conspiracy. Maoists lured them by offering hefty amount of money and positions in the new government. There is no political reason at all behind the move,” Mainali told myrepublica.com.

He said those who defected from the party had no complaints against the party´s recent decisions until Thursday.

Of the total eight lawmakers of CPN (ML), those quitting from the party are Yadubangsha Jha, Tilak Bahadur Thapa Magar, Ganesh Prasad Chaudhary and Sharada Nepali.

Nepali had cast her vote for Maoist candidate Pushpa Kamal Dahal earlier in the third round voting challenging the party´s decision to stay neutral.

Jagat Bahadur Bogati headed the newly formed CPN (ML-Socialist). “We took the decision to form the new party as Mainali deviated from the party´s set goals and principle, led the party against the spirit of writing a federal republic democratic constitution,” said a statement issued by the party.

INTERVIEW

Why did your party split?

It was a sudden development. May be those involved were conspiring secretly for sometime but I had no knowledge about their plan at all.

What do you think led them to make this move?

It has no political reason at all. Our party unanimously took the decision to stand for national consensus government and stay neutral. All those who quit the party had also agreed on that decision until 3 pm yesterday (Thursday). They never raised any question.

Did they lobby in the party to support Maoist candidate?

No they didn´t. They said the party´s decision was right. They never expressed complaints against party´s recent decisions.

If there was no difference at all, then why did they defect from the party?

It has become clear that they quit the party for money. Maoists are the main architect of this conspiracy. All this has been done by Maoists as a part of their plan to bag the prime ministerial post. Maoists lured them by offering a hefty amount of money and position in their government.

The Maoist party that claims to be a revolutionary and nationalist party has promoted unhealthy politics. The Maoists have tarnished the reputation of parliament by promoting such malpractices. It is also an attack on democracy.

Don´t you realize that you failed to keep the party intact?

We didn´t have a chance to do anything as they took the move quite irresponsibly. Had there been any political differences, we would have discussed and settled it. They were saying that the party´s decisions were cent percent correct until yesterday.

Whatever accusations they hurled in public on Friday morning against the CPN-ML was just for public consumption. If anyone has genuine concerns, we will address it and try to get them back into the party.
