KATHMANDU, Nov 22:  The Special Court on Tuesday sent former chairman of the Tax Settlement Commission (TSC) Lumbadhoj Mahat and former member Umesh Dhakal to Dillibazar prison for their failure to post bail imposed by the court in relation to tax settlement cases.

A three-member bench of judges Baburam Regmi, Dwarikaman Joshi and Ratna Bahadur Bagchand had imposed Rs 10 million bail on each of them, according to Special Court Registrar Bhim Kumar Shrestha. “They could not post the bail so we sent them to the prison," he told Republica.

Chudamani Sharma, another former member of the commission, has also been facing charges of irregularities. However, he was released from custody few months ago as per a Supreme Court order. The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority had sent Sharma to police custody for failing to post Rs 3 billion bail sought by the anti-graft body.

The three office-bearers of the TSC have been accused of whittling down tax liabilities amounting to Rs 30.52 billion to Rs 9.54 billion for purportedly resolving disputed tax cases.
