“Formation of such a squad has become almost a necessity,” Mahat, who is a central committee member of the party, told journalists in Chitwan. [break]
Mahat arrived here to extend condolence to the family members of NC cadre Tarka Bahadur Kunwar, who was killed 13 days ago allegedly by the Maoists.
Mahat revealed that formation of such a squad is under discussion in his party, which is something contrary to what NC Acting President Sushil Koirala has publicly said on the issue.
Koirala has publicly said that formation of the squad is against the policy of the party. Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba was supposed to announce the formation of the squad called Tarun Dasta in Tatopani of Sindhupalchowk on Saturday but the program was put off at the last moment.
NC is mulling over formation of the squad at a time when the ruling parties have been demanding the Maoists to disband the YCL, the paramilitary youth wing of the UCPN-Maoist.
CPN-UML has already formed a youth squad under the banner of Youth Force. Unlike the YCL, the Youth Force members however do not live in camps and Youth Force is also not a paramilitary force.
Mahat also held Maoists responsible for the present political deadlock and said that the prime minister has not resigned due to the Maoists.
“Had the Maoists not demanded the prime minister´s resignation, the latter would have already stepped down,” said Mahat, adding that there would be no peace in the country until the Maoist cantonments are vacated.
