JAPAN, May 19: Scientist Dr. Mahabir Pun was honored with an award at a global summit during the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day at Tokyo. Pun won an award, the International Communication and Technology Award for his contributions and achievements to improve Nepal’s communication systems and inventions.
Pun has been credited for expanding wireless technologies to develop rural parts of Nepal. In 2007, Pun was awarded the Magsaysay Award, considered as the Nobel Prize of Asia, in recognition of "his innovative application of wireless computer technology in Nepal, bringing progress to remote mountain areas by connecting his village to the global village". Pun is one of four Nepalis to receive the Magsaysay Award, and the only one to receive the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.
