KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Though the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) remains undecided over their support to the prime ministerial candidate, Chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Republican (MPRF-R) JP Gupta on Saturday said UDMF, an alliance of five Madhes-based political parties, the alliance of Madhesi parties would vote for Dr. Baburam Bhattrai in the prime ministerial election if the Maoist party agrees to amend its proposal on peace process and constitution writing.

“The Maoist proposal is not complete. So, if they come up with an amendment to the proposal till 7 pm Friday evening, UDMF will vote for Bhattarai,” Gupta said in an interaction organized by Reporters´ Club Nepal on Saturday. [break]

Gupta said that the Maoists have hinted at amending the proposal.

Gupta ruled out any split in the alliance over their choice between Bhattarai and Poudel.

Gupta accused Nepali Congress and CPN-UML of lack of clear views on the peace process.

Gupta said the country will get the new prime minister in the first election scheduled for Sunday. He claimed no party can form the government without the support of UDMF, stating that it is a decisive force in the prime ministerial election.

Another senior Madhesi leader told Republica that they would vote for Bhattarai because they see slim hope of Congress addressing the Madhesi issues, completing the peace process and constitution drafting.

"We are almost sure to vote for Bhattarai. Only thing left is officially endorsing the name of Bhattarai from the alliance," said the leader on the condition of anonymity.

"We have found Bhattarai in between extreme communism and extreme status quoists," the leader further said.
