Madhes protesters try to set 5 cops ablaze

BIRATNAGAR, Sept 9: Biratnagar remained tensed throughout Wednesday as clashes erupted between bandha enforcers and police personnel at various localities including Rani, Mahabir Chowk and Roadshekh Chowk.

Agitators vandalized police checkpost-2 near the Nepal-India border and hurled stones towards security personnel deployed there. DSP Promod Kharel, spokesperson of Morang District Police Office (DPO), informed that protesters also hurled petrol towards police personnel deployed there and attempted to set the personnel ablaze.Five security personnel, including those from the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police, were deployed at the check-post at the time of the incident, according to DSP Kharel.

"We were forced to open fire after the agitators sprinkled petrol and tried to set personnel ablaze," said DSP Kharel. He added that police fired 16 rounds to take the situation under control.

At least 20 demonstrators, including CA member of the Federal Socialist Forum, Usha Yadav, sustained injuries during the clashes, according to Umesh Yadav, coordinator of the protest mobilization committee. The injured are receiving treatment at various places in Biratnagar.

Among the injured, Muhammad Firoj Khan, 30, was critically injured after being hit close to the neck by a rubber bullet fired by police.

A large number of police have been deployed at various places in Biratnagar to avert any further untoward incident.
