Made-In-Nepal footwear drawing big bucks

KATHMANDU, Feb 4: The Exhibition & Big Sale Mela at City Hall organised by three Nepali footwear manufacturers recorded a transaction of about Rs 10 million in last two weeks. This certainly attests the growing popularity of locally produced shoes in the market.

The 15-day expo is being jointly organized by Shikhar Shoes Company, Sky Shoes Company, and Base Footwear Dear Hill (BFDH) Shoes Company.



"Transaction has been doubled to Rs 10 million over the two weeks, compared to our earlier estimates. Locally manufactured products are gaining popularity among Nepali consumers," said Basu Dev Acharya, director of Shikhar Shoes Company.

According to Acharya, 15,000 pairs of shoes and slippers were sold during last 14 days. The organizers had estimated the sales to be around 7,000 pairs. [break]



"A positive response from consumers shows locally manufactured footwear are at par with international brands in quality," Acharya said. He claimed the share of locally produced footwear stands well over 55 percent of the total footwear market in Nepal. "We can increase our to over 60 percent within a year in the face of growing popularity of local products among consumers," he further added.



Sheerish Siwakoti, a student visitor from Nepal Army Medical Collage, said Nepal-made footwear, which are of good quality like those from foreign brands, are comparatively cheap.



Hom Nath Upadhyay, managing director of BFDH, claimed around 5,000 pairs of shoes were sold from its stall, 100 percent up from the 2,500 pairs it originally expected to sell.



Similarly, Manoj Shrestha, director of Sky Shoes, said the company´s stall succeeded to sell 3,000 pairs during the period. However, the company had expected to sell around 1,500 pairs.



The exhibition, which saw over 100,000 Nepali visitors over the two weeks, is concluding on Sunday.
