London court postpones hearing on case against Col Lama

KATHMANDU, March 18: The hearing of the case against Nepal Army Colonel Kumar Lama, arrested by the British authorities on charges of extrajudicial detention and torture in Nepal, has been postponed yet again on Tuesday.

The hearing was put off till August citing technical reasons. According to source, the jury prorogued the proceeding owing to lack of translators. A British criminal court, London´s Old Bailey had begun the hearing from the last week of February.
While hearing the case, the court had summoned eyewitness of the case.


Lama was arrested on January 3, 2013, when he reached London to meet his wife, who was in London by then. Lama was then working as a United Nation expert in South Sudan.

He is charged with inflicting torture on Nepali citizens Janak Bahadur Raut and Karam Hussain in Gorusinghe Army Barracks in 2005 during the armed conflict.



The Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Human Rights on Friday had directed the government to pursue diplomatic initiatives to bring Lama back to Nepal and prosecute him as per domestic law.
