DHANKUTA, Aug 21: Publishers of weekly newspapers here are in protest against the government decision requiring the newspapers to be registered under the Value Added Tax (VAT), saying the decision was unfavourable to newspapers published locally.

Publishers of all the five weekly newspapers published from Dhankuta on Tuesday handed over a memorandum to the government through the Regional Administrator calling for withdrawing the decision. [break]

The government through its decision made provision that firms with annual transactions of over two million rupees should register under VAT and they have to pay 13 per cent of their income as VAT.

The newspaper publishers have stated that they are operating in loss due to the fall in the advertisements and this new decision would deal a further financial blow to the already flagging weekly newspapers.
