KATHMANDU, March 12: The government and the Kisan-Majdur Sanghsarsha Samiti reached a four-point agreement to address issues related to loan sharking and fraud on Monday.

Under the guidance of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, discussions held on Monday at the Ministry of Home Affairs concluded with an agreement. The victims have decided to withdraw their protest following the agreement.

Secretariat of Home Minister Lamichhane has confirmed that talks held on Sunday and Monday at the Ministry of Home Affairs resulted in an agreement, leading to the withdrawal of the protest called by the struggle committee.

Recognizing the need for long-term solutions, the two sides have agreed to establish an inquiry commission to investigate unfair transactions (loan sharking) and submit a report within three months as per the Commission of Inquiry Act, 2026 BS.

According to the agreement,  the commission will submit a proposal to the government after thorough examination, urging the Ministry of Finance to allocate necessary funds in the upcoming budget for financial assistance, relief, and compensation to the oppressed classes. This aims to prevent them from falling victim to loan sharks, moneylenders, and pawnbrokers due to financial hardships. Consequently, the movement's activities will be temporarily suspended.

The loan shark victims, who embarked on a 23-day journey from Kakarvitta in Jhapa and Mahendranagar in Kanchanpur and arrived in Kathmandu on February 21, have been actively engaged in protests and negotiations.

Nirga Nabin, spokesperson for the struggle committee, stated that efforts are underway to inform those currently participating in the protest about the agreement and their decision to postpone the protest.
