KATHMANDU, Oct 29: The famous French band Lo’Jo is here in town to share their artistic expressions of world music to the Nepali public. From the usual six-member group only three -- Denis Péan, Nadia Nid El Mourid, and her sister Yamina have traveled here to perform at Planet Nepal: Festival of Arts & Environment.

But audiences can be assured to feast on some great music.[break]

The N’Goni (African eight stringed harp), played by the band with an Indian harmonium along with some percussion make an awe-inspiring, original sound, that no one can replicate.

Before they performed on Friday evening with the Kutumba ensemble at the Patan Durbar Square, we caught up with Denis Péan and interacted with him about his experiences.

“It’s our first time here in Nepal, and we are enjoying every moment of it,” he started, “as far as I can tell from my time here, the people are open-minded and kind.”

Péan who has played in countries far and wide, admits that the trio don’t know what to expect from the crowd here.

“I hope that our music can break the language barrier, and deliver a good show for the people here,” he added

The trio hopes to re-enact what they achieved performing at the Desert Music Festival 2001 in the Sahara desert.

“That was a life-changing experience, perhaps the most incredible point of my life. We had nomads there among the audience; some who had never seen white people,” remarked Péan.

And what about Kutumba, who they were going to jam with?

“Our music is based mostly on improvisation, and I feel that Kutumba also share the same ideology,” he stated, “and they are an amazingly talented band so we hope to wow the crowd,” he stated.

The group will be performing again today, at the Patan Durbar Square. The show is set to start at 4 PM
