KATHMANDU, Jan 10: The party unification coordination committee of two left parties - CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) - has formed a taskforce to finalize the formation of provincial governments and alliance candidates for the National Assembly.

A meeting of the coordination committee held at UML chair K P Oli's residence on Tuesday decided to form a taskforce to finalize the stakes of the two parties in the provincial governments. UML leaders Subas Nembang, Shankar Pokharel and Surendra Pandey and Maoist leaders Ram Bahadur Thapa, Barsha Man Pun and Matrika Yadav are in the taskforce.

According to UML leader Jhala Nath Khanal, the taskforce will prepare a proposal on the formation of provincial governments and members of National Assembly. The left alliance has swept elections in all provinces except in Province 2.  According to sources, the Maoist Center is likely to lead government in Province 6 and 7 and UML is claiming government in the remaining provinces.

Likewise, two separate taskforces will work for sorting out party unification issues between the two parties. “Two taskforces will work for finalizing party's ideology and political line and preparing party's organizational structure,” said Khanal. Members of the two taskforces will be finalized by the next meeting.

The the unified party is expected to follow a socialism-oriented ideology, which is expected to be the meeting point between the two parties following Maoism and Marxism and Leninism.

Though the two parties had forged a poll alliance and announced unification last year, the unification process has not taken momentum after the two parties failed to find a meeting point over leadership management and other issues. Maoist Center chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been eying the post of chief of the unified party and proposing UML Chief Oli as the new prime minister in the upcoming government which is expected to be formed by the left alliance.
