Lawyers to continue protest until resignation of chief justice

KATHMANDU, Nov 8: The agitating lawyers have announced to continue their protest unless Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana steps down from his post. 


While staging a sit-in program outside the Supreme Court on Monday, lawyers warned of a nationwide protest if the chief justice failed to give heed to their demand.  According to Ishwari Prasad Bhattarai, Vice-President of Nepal Bar Association, the potest of lawyers will continue until the chief justice steps down from his post.

Bhattarai also warned the chief justice to get ready to face wrath of lawyers from across the country if he does not resign. “We demand the resignation of the chief justice. The Nepal Bar Association will not back down from this demand. The chief justice should be ready to face the consequences if lawyers from all over the country stage a protest against him,” Bhattarai said. 


Similarly, Senior Advocate Dinesh Tripathi said there is no option but to request the chief justice to gracefully exit the post as the credibility of the judiciary is at stake. He said that the chief justice has no other choice but to resign to save the judiciary from the crisis at hand. 


Former central member of NBA, Raman Kumar Karna said the chief justice should not delay vacating his post to save the judiciary. He also claimed that the daily works of the apex court will not resume unless Chief Justice  Rana resigns. 


Meanwhile,  NBA has decided to continue with the protests outside the Supreme court on Tuesday as well, demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Rana. The umbrella organization of lawyers across the country also urged all lawyers to attend the protest program.
