KATHMANDU, March 2: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing on the controversy over the oath of Vice President Parmananda Jha till next month after lawyers could not finish their pleadings. The oath has been dragged into controversy after the vice president took the oath in Hindi language instead of the official Nepali language.
Earlier in the afternoon,the lawyers pleading in the case filed to revoke the swearing-in of Vice President Parmananda Jha had argued that the current constitution doesn’t have a provision to take oath in Hindi language.
They were pleading at the Supreme Court on Monday in favor of senior lawyer Bal Krishna Neupane, who had filed a writ petition some five months ago demanding that Vice President Jha’s oath-taking be nullified and re-rescheduled. Jha had taken the oath of office and secrecy of vice president in Hindi language though President Dr Ram Baran Yadav had administered it in Nepali language.
Lawyer Chandra Kanta Gyawali while drawing an analogy of recently elected president of the United States Barack Obama who took oath of office and secrecy twice, argued that the swearing-in can be rescheduled in Nepal as well.
A joint bench of justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi and Balaram KC is hearing the case.
