“Tul Bahadur fainted after losing wife and two children and has yet to regain consciousness,” said Durga Bahadur Khadka, who was involved in rescue works.

Police and locals managed to pull out bodies only late in the afternoon and the bodies have been brought to Primary Health Center in Sulichaur in the evening for autopsy.

Ruining Bazar, which is around 35 kilometers from the district headquarters Liwang, is the second biggest market of north-east Rolpa with people of 22 VDCs depending on it.

The persons who died in landslides were non-local and had been living in Ruining for business or sewing clothes as in the case of the Pariyars of Gumchal. The Pariyar duo of Kapilvastu had also reached Ruining for business.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kedar Rajaure at the District Police Office, Rolpa said three concrete houses and three others were swept away by the landslides in the bazaar that is just below a barren hill. “The whole market is under risk of landslide,” Inspector at Area Police Office, Sulichour Nanda Pokharel said.

Police said a 30-man Nepal Army team also reached the spot for rescue work. The 18 injured persons have been taken to Sulichaur for further treatment after primary care at the local Navajeevan Clinic.
