KATHMANDU, June 29: National Sports Council (NSC) Member-secretary Yuvaraj Lama has threatened to quit from his position if the government puts a ceiling on the budget for NSC and does not support the plans and programs set by newly-formed NSC board.

"We have asked for a total budget of Rs 80.6 million for the upcoming fiscal year and we have categorically mentioned our programs and budget necessary for those programs. We are looking forward to the decision of National Planning Commission (NPC) and Ministry of Finance (MoF)," said Lama at a press conference on Wednesday. [break]

"If we look at the previous year, the government had provided Rs 20 million to NSC for salary and allowances to the staff but less than Rs 9 million was allocated for organizing tournaments," Lama added. "If this trend continues this year, it is better to shut down NSC office," he said.

Lama said that NSC could have transparency problems in the past but he vowed to make all financial dealings transparent in his tenure. "I´ve promised all these things to NPC and MoF. If they put a ceiling as the previous years despite providing all the details of our programs, I´ll submit my resignation to MoF in the presence of thousands of players," said Lama.

"If you do not allocate budget for tournaments and development works, it is worthless to employ around 1,100 employees in NSC. What could a coach do, if there is no tournament" Lama questioned.

During the press conference, Lama made the decision taken by newly-formed NSC board public. According to Lama, NSC had formed a taskforce under his leadership for conducting primary works for establishing a Sports College. Likewise, the board has endorsed the proposal of forming National School Sports Development Federation and National College Sports Development Federation under NSC.

NSC has also decided to provide two different identity cards, one to the medalists of international tournaments and one to the national players. "We´ll initiate talks with government and private agencies for providing special facilities to the card holders," said Lama.

Likewise, NSC had decided to form an International Coordination Bureau and a Sports Development, Infrastructure Building Committee. Lama is to lead the Bureau while NSC Member Indra Bahadur Thing will lead the latter.

NSC also decided to establish a media center within the NSC premises.
