Lama, Khanal in semis

KATHMANDU, May 27: Diwakar Lama and Kshitiz Khanal advanced into the semifinals of the 19th International High School Karate Championship on Monday winning their respective matches held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.



Lama defeated Rupesh Rai and Khanal saw off Rajkumar Tamang in the quarterfinals of boys" 9-10 years age group.[break]



The first day of the tournament featured only Nepali players.



In the girls" 9-10 years age group, Anisha Karki and Nima Lama secured berths in the last four. Karki beat Jyoti Lama while Nima Lama edged out Kusum Paudel en route to the semifinals.



Likewise, Sabina Magar and Sita Khanal made it to the semifinals of girls" U-12 years category.



In the boys" 6-7 years age group, Anish Khatri and Suman Thapa Magar won their respective quarterfinal matches to secure semifinal berths.



Home Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire had earlier inaugurated the tournament amidst a function. Ghimire, who is also the foreign minister, pledged that the government would do all it can for the development of the sports sector.



Altogether 520 players from Nepal, 300 from India and 60 from Bangladesh are vying for 52 golds in the three-day tournament organized by Nepal Shito-Ryu Karate Association.
