JHAPA, July 19: Thirty-five laborers of Udaypur who were returning home from Meghalaya, India, were attacked by an unidentified group at Itabhatta of Mechinagar Municipality on Saturday night. Eight of the laborers were injured in the attack.

The laborers were attacked at around 11 p.m. when they were going home from Kakarbhitta on a reserved minibus. "They stopped the vehicle and vandalized it," Rajan Pariyar of Triyuga-12 who received injuries to his head, said, "Then they came inside and thrashed us."

Transport workers have called a banda in the district for the past four days demanding compensation for the family of taxi driver Deepak Pandey who was killed three months ago.

According to the victims, the group beat them up accusing them of defying their banda. However, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
