KU girls team leaves for Norway

KATHMANDU, July 26: U-16 girls team of Kathmandu University (KU) will leave for Oslo, Norway on Friday to compete in the Norway Cup 2012 Football Tournament to be held there from July 28 to August 4.



The 22-member delegation includes 17 footballers, coach Pradip Humagain and parents of four players. According to coach Humagain, the parents of individual players have sponsored the travel and other costs of the players.[break]



Teams from 52 different countries will participate in the tournament.



The team will play three matches in group stage and will feature in the playoff matches irrespective of wins or defeats in the group round.



According to coach Humagain, the team had been undergoing training for the last 16 months and had played 17 matches in the last 45 days, out of which it won 16 and lost one.



Shrawana Shrestha is the skipper of the team. Other players in the team are Joshna Shrestha, Dilasha Manandhar, Rajshree Pandey, Saru KC, Akriti Shakya, Maya Roka, Slesha Shrestha, Kabya Shrestha, Sajina Hangma Rai Limbu, Ritika T hapa, Swornima Lamichhane, Sophia Dahal, Apechhya Bajracharya, Pratistha Sakha, Aakriti Chhetri and Nima Tamang.



Speaking at a function organized to bid farewell to the players, skipper Shrawana Shrestha thanked the parents for their support. "Though the environment is not favorable for girl footballers in the nation, our parents came forward to help us go abroad for competing in the tournament. We are very thankful to them."



Speaking on behalf of parents, Bhola Thapa, father of Ritika Thapa, said more than victory, the representation of nation in the tournament was important. He also wished success for the team.



ANFA executive committee member Ramesh Raymajhi handed over the captain´s armband to Shrestha and bade farewell to the team.
