KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Indian foreign minister SM Krishna will be visiting Nepal from January 15-17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Friday. He is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala and senior leaders of main political parties during his three-day stay.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff of Indian Army General Deepak Kapoor will visit Nepal from January 21-23 on the invitation of Chief of Army Staff Chhatra Man Singh Gurung, the ministry said.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav will confer the title of honorary General of the Nepal Army on General Kapoor. Bestowing of honorary titles is a routine affair and is usually reciprocal for the last six decades. Upholding a long tradition between the two countries, Indian President Pratibha Patil had conferred the title of Honorary General of the Indian Army on Gurung on December 14.

An invitation letter to General Kapoor was sent by General Gurung on October 23 soon after the cabinet meeting held the same day gave a nod to the defense ministry´s proposal.

The NA chief has also extended invitation to General Kapoor´s wife and other staff officers of the Indian Army.

Both the visits will hold high significance in the light of ongoing negotiations with India over resumption of supplies of both lethal and non-lethal weapons to the NA.
