BIRATNAGAR, Aug 23: A high-level team of the Ministry of Irrigation that toured areas being eroded by swollen rivers in eastern Nepal for two days said on Sunday that the Koshi embankment does not face the danger of breach this year. [break]

“Last year, the breach occurred when water flow was 168,000 cusec. But this year, the embankment is fine even as the water flow is 312,000 cusec,” said Irrigation Minister Bal Krishna Khand.

Khand, however, admitted that the rising water level has eroded some spurs of Koshi´s eastern embankment in Prakashpur. He added that technicians have been sent there to prevent further damage.

“There is a minor breach of spurs in Prakashpur, and technicians are actively working there,” he said.

Ministry officials also said that projects will be initiated to contain erosion on the banks of rivers in eastern Nepal where erosion is taking place this monsoon.

Irrigation Secretary Umakant Chaudhari said work will soon be initiated to manage Mawa, Ratuwa, Kankai and Bakraha rivers.

Floods last week took lives and damaged property in eastern Nepal. They also eroded embankments of rivers. From Monday, Home Minister Bhim Rawal will be inspecting the flood-hit areas in eastern Nepal.
