The ailing Koirala was given one pint blood transfusion on Monday morning, according Dr Man Bahadur KC. "His health condition is gradually improving," said KC. "He can be taken home once the level of hemoglobin in the blood reaches above 10 gram." [break]
Doctors treating Koirala said his hemoglobin level increased to 8 gram, up from 6 gram, on Monday evening.
Koirala, who has long been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, was admitted to Sahid Gangalal National Heart Center, Bansbari, for treatment after his condition deteriorated on Sunday. A team of four physicians including Dr KC, Dr Arjun Karki, Dr Jagadish Agrawal and Dr Arun Maskey is involved in his treatment.
Dr Maskey, who is also Executive Director of the Hospital, told media persons Monday afternoon that Koirala´s condition has seen improvement compared to Sunday. "The blood test report is not bad," he said. "He has also taken a normal diet."
Doctors have given Koirala antibiotic medicines for containing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
On Monday morning, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav reached the hospital to inquire about his health condition. He stayed there for about 15 minutes.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal also met Koirala at the hospital later in the evening.
Talking to media after inquiring about Koirala´s condition, the prime minister said the government was even ready to bring in doctors from abroad for his treatment. He added that the government would leave no stone unturned for Koirala´s treatment. "But his condition is gradually improving," he further said.
Shortly after the prime minister´s visit, Maoist leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai reached the hospital to learn about Koirala´s latest condition.
