KATHMANDU, June 8: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) will provide nursing services in all public schools from the financial year 2023/24.

KMC has prepared to operate health promotion centers in all 32 wards and provide nursing services to all 89 public schools through the same center from next year.

According to KMC Education Department Head Sitaram Koirala, the metropolis is preparing to conduct one school, one nurse program in schools with a large number of students and to provide the service through wards in community schools with fewer students.

Currently, all the local levels of the country including KMC are preparing to make policies and programs. Koirala said that KMC will include the subject in its policy and program and implement it from the coming year.

Preparations have been made to provide nursing services two days a week in each school through the health promotion center to be operated in the ward. A nurse appointed by KAMPA through the center will conduct a health examination of the students for at least two days and if there are any problems that need to be addressed immediately.

A school nurse program is a provincial program. Currently, the program is being conducted only in eight schools in KMC. By increasing this, the metropolis will provide nursing services in all schools.

Along with the program, the metropolis has also prepared to provide psychological counseling services from FY 2023/24. Similarly, the metropolis education advisor Reshu Aryal mentioned that there is an increase in investment in technology and special education this year compared to last year.

Since the goal of KMC is to increase the quality of education, the skill program in education, which started from this academic session, will be further expanded. The program, which is currently being conducted only from 9th to 12th secondary level, will be taken to the other classes as well. Of the 89 community schools in the metropolis, 59 are secondary schools and 30 are primary schools. Only 56 out of 99 secondary schools have implemented skill programs in education.
