KATHMANDU, July 29: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is to carry out monitoring to make its campaign of prohibiting the use of plastic bags below 40 micron a successful.

Although the KMC has launched the campaign from July 17, it would carry out regular monitoring regarding its implementation.

Five joint teams of KMC Environment Department and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police Force would be deputed for the monitoring, said Chief of KMC Environment Department, Rabin Man Shrestha.

The teams would check the weight of plastic bags from micrometers and further action would be taken if the used plastic bags and products are found below 40 micron.

However, flowers, garlands and other decorative products manufactured from plastic would not be allowed to be used, shared Shrestha.

KMC said that problems have surfaced in managing garbage in landfill sites due to polythene.

Out of 24 percent of garbage produced in the city, 75.5 percent is biodegradable and 24.5 percent is non biodegradable.

Of the non biodegradable waste, plastic products accounted for 6.5 per cent, according to the Department.
