KATHMANDU, April 8: Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), said that the Nepal Police has built police beats illegally on the road and has ordered that the structures be demolished.

Mayor Shah said that the law is the same for ordinary citizens and the police force. He said that the Nepal Police has set a wrong precedent by creating its own structures by encroaching upon the road and the footpath.

“If the Nepal Police, which enforces the law, itself builds structures by encroaching upon the road and the footpath, it will set a wrong precedent. The police should remove the structure themselves. Otherwise, we will be forced to remove those structures as per the laws,” Mayor Shah posted a status on social media on Saturday.

He said that the purpose of the footpath is to be used by the people to walk.

“We have stopped street vendors on the footpath as the footpath should always be used for walking. This rule is not only for common people. It is and should be for everyone,” he wrote.

As far as the embassies and other foreign missions are concerned, Mayor Shah said that the KMC has already written to the concerned ministries to move forward with the work of resolving the problem. “In the case of embassies and foreign missions, we have already written to the relevant ministries to proceed with the work. We must be prepared to establish the fact that the law is not separate for ordinary citizens and for others. Let's get ready.”

Mayor Shah also posted on Facebook this morning saying that he will not pick up the garbage of Singha Durbar anymore and that the leaders should be dumped in Sisdol to clean the country.
