KATHMANDU, Feb 4: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started collecting waste that is segregated directly as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste from the households itself from Ward- 27. For this, the KMC has deployed vehicles labeled with distinctive green and blue colors.
Specific vehicles have been organized to collect, transport, and manage waste that has been segregated by residents. With a population of 5,000, Ward-27 comprises 1,400 households. While lauding the move of KMC, a local resident Resident Ramesh Maharjan said that he will actively participate in waste segregation at the household level.
Yogesh Khadgi, chairman of Ward-27, announced plans to visit each household and provide waste segregation guidance. He said, "We are educating our staff involved in garbage collection on the proper method of sorting waste into designated vehicles. The residents of the ward have responded positively to this initiative."
KMC to manage only segregated waste from households itself
The ward plans to conduct an awareness program for the next one week and conduct a practice collection of segregated waste samples. After this, the program will be fully implemented.
Rabi Man Shrestha, the head of the KMC's Environment Management Department,, informed that a vehicle with a capacity of 3.5 cubic meters has been prepared for collecting household-segregated waste.
According to him, the vehicle is divided into two sections, distinguished by green and blue colors, with each section having a capacity of 1.5 cubic meters.
He said, "Externally, the vehicle appears in two colors. The green section is designated for decomposable waste, while the blue section is allocated for non-decomposable and other waste."
