Investigation officials have also arrived at the conclusion that the main accused Biren Shrestha (Pradhan) initially planned to demand Rs 2.5 million in ransom, but he decided to lower it to Rs 1 million after the 19-year-old girl was accidentally killed while trying to silence her in his apartment at Khusibu.
DIGP Bharat Bahadur GC said Biren had managed to kidnap Khyati in his second attempt.
Addressing a news conference on Friday, GC said Biren had forced Khyati to take sleeping tablets soon after she was taken to his apartment at Khusibu.
Once his accomplice Merina Shakya took Khyati to his apartment at Khusibu Town Planning, Biren himself served coffee to both Merina and Khyati, but the coffee he served to Khyati was laced with sleeping tablets called Anxit. He then served a bottle of Slice juice laced with more sleeping pills to Khyati. Police said Khyati fell asleep after drinking the Slice. Biren tied her legs and hands and taped her mouth.

Biren hit her in the head with an iron rod three times when Khyati protested his move and tried to shout at about 11 am. Co-accused Shakya received injury in her hand while trying to save Khyati.
Biren then dropped Merina to her home and threatened to kill both her parents and the only brother if she leaked the information.
In the meantime, he began sending SMSs to the victim´s family demanding Rs 1 million in ransom.
On the next day, he tried to dump the body somewhere, but concluded that it was impossible to dump the whole body on his own. On the third day, he dismembered her body and packed the parts in different packets.
On the fifth day (June 9), he dumped her torso in Sainbu and hands and legs in Chitwan. On June 10, he dumped her head at Raniban.
Police concluded that Biren had no plan to safely release Khyati even if he got the ransom as Khyati knew him and he could face action after her release. He wanted to keep her alive until he got the ransom but accidentally killed her on the first day of her kidnapping.
