KHOTANG, Feb 7: As a result of the 'Literate Nepal' mission introduced in 2012, 96.56% people from 15 to 60 years of age are to be declared literate in Khotang, according to the District Education Office (DEO).
Earlier, there were altogether 139,941 illiterate people in two municipalities and eight rural municipalities of Khotang. As the district has met the required criteria, it will be declared a literate district on February 14, said Dhan Bahadur Shrestha, District Education Officer.
Revised interest rate corridor system introduced
As per the details provided by the DEO, as many as 135,129 locals of Khotang are capable of reading and writing Nepali alphabets.
A meeting of Non-Formal Education Center and District Education Coordination Committee (DCC) announced the date for declaring Khotang a literate district after the villagers were able to pass various kinds of literacy tests.
According to the DEO, a total population of 96.5% in Majhuwagadhi Municipality, 96.04 in Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, 96.36% in Lamidanda Rural Municipality, 96.56% in Kaplasgadhi Rural Municipality, 98.56 % in Sakela Rural Municipality is literate now.
Likewise, the literacy rate in other rural municipalities is also more or less similar. According to Non-Formal Education Sector, Sanothimi, educational programs will be continued even after declaring Khotang a literate district.
The 'Literate Nepal' mission was launched with the purpose of making citizens able to at least read and write their native languages, words, numbers and sentences.
