KHOTANG, Aug 2: Massive landslides on Sunday morning triggered by incessant rainfall since the past few days have put Khotang District Prison at high risk. Two main prison buildings and a guard post is at high risk of being swept away.
The continuous downpour has also caused structural damage to the prison's compound. According to Chitrakhar Acharya, the prison's jailor, cracks have appeared in various places of the prison, and buildings are at high risk. Everyone in the prison is gripped with fear of potential landslides.
As landslides also caused damages to safety tank of the prison's toilet, bad odors have spread in the area. Landslides have also already washed away concrete compound and sewage of the prison that are located about 100 meters away.
"Especially the cells of women prisoners are at high risk. Everyone would be at high risk unless the downpour stops," said Acharya. "We have already informed the management department about the risks of landslides. We are ready to transfer women prisoners if the situation gets riskier," he added.
According to him, the prison currently holds 94 male prisoners, 14 women prisoners, and 5 children.
A team led by Chief District Officer Chandra Bahadur Karki recently inspected the prison.
