The accident took place when a passenger bus, Ba 2 Kha 6376, headed for Kathmandu from the district headquarters Diktel plunged some 200 meters down the road at Barkhetar of the district on Tuesday morning. The bus had departed from Diktel at 5 am and the accident took place at 8 am.
According to Police Inspector Saroj Rai, 23 among those injured have been airlifted to Kathmandu for further treatment while seven are receiving treatment at a local health post.
Five killed in Parbat bus mishap identified
As many as 24 people including a five-year-old boy died on the spot in the bus accident. Security personnel from Area Police Office, Halesi, Police Post, Arkhaule and locals have rescued the victims.
The dead bodies have been retrieved from a stiff cliff and stream while the bus has been stuck in a grove of bamboos.
A joint squad from Diktel-based Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force is carrying out rescue work.
Police said 28 passengers were on board the bus in the beginning. But, the number increased to 70 when some passengers came in on the way.
A preliminary investigation of the police shows that the accident took place while the bus was trying to swerve a pile of stones on the roadside.
This is an accident-prone area. On January 14, 2009, people had lost their lives when a jeep met with an accident at Barkhetar.
