RAMECHHAP, Aug 14: The local people of Khimti VDC in Ramechhap district, which was badly damaged by devastating flood and landslides on Monday night, have urged the government to rebuild the damaged physical infrastructures.

At a meeting with Information and Communications Minister Madhav Prasad Poudel, who reached Khimti on Tuesday to take stock of the damages caused by flood and landslides, Khimti folks asked the government to rebuild irrigation canals, bridges, road, micro hydropower projects, drinking water projects and health facilities, which were damaged by flood and landslides. In response, minister Poudel assured that the government would introduce short-term and long-term programs to deal with problems caused by Khimti flood and landslides. Poudel, accompanied by home secretary Bhola Shiwakoti, also expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives and properties in the calamity.

Details of the damages caused by flood and landslide in Khimti are yet to be confirmed. On Wednesday, a committe, led by Khimti VDC secretary Keyar Man Tamang, was also formed to assess the details of damage.

Government officials also distributed emergency relief materials to the flood victims on Wednesday.

The Khimti locals say they have faced several difficulties in the aftermath of flood and landslides. The locals are now forced to fetch water from faraway rivers as the local source of water was swept away by the flood. Similarly, sweeping away of irrigation canals has left the locals in a fix. "We wonder how we will irrigate our crop fields this year," said Sher Bahadur Khadka, a local.

Two days after the tragedy, decomposing bodies of domestic animals that were buried under the debris have now begun to surface, causing pollution across Khimti bazaar.

Meanwhile, three children who were injured in flood and landslides were taken to Kathmandu for further treatment. Aaimala Tamang, Maimala Tamang and their brother Hyambe, who lost both their parents, were taken to the capital.
