Khadka completed the distance in 11 minute 3.9 second to achieve her personal best. Her previous best was 11 minute 38.8, second. She opined that she could have done better if she did not have knee injuries. Increasing her speed slowly Khadka raced ahead of host China´s Sijua Su with only 400m to finish. But her knee injuries relapsed and the Chinese athlete finally finished ahead of Khadka. [break]
Khadka´s eyes were filled with tears due to pain while she moved out of the track. She was not in the condition to speak. Promptly she was taken to a medicl team for treatment. She returned to the Olympics village after normal treatment. Khadka was the only player from Nepal in Nanjing event without coach. Tennis coach Krishna Raj Ghale helped her.
"I had hoped that I could finish ahead of the Chinese runner but failed after the knee problems ," said Khadka. She however, expressed satisfaction for achieving her personal best.
Japan´s Fukiko Ando claimed gold in the event clocking 9 minute 23.50 second while North Korean athlete took home both silver and bronze medals.
India and Sri Lanka are the only South Asian countries to win medals in the event until Thursday. India has participated in the Games under the flagship of Olympic Committee as the National the Olympic Committee of India has been banned.
Host China tops the medal tally of the event to conclude on Saturday. China has earned 88 medals in total, including 44 gold medals. South Korea lies in second position with 19 gold and Japan is the third spot with seven gold. Thailand has earned six gold while Chinese Taipei and Singapore have five gold medals apiece.
Swimming
Nepali swimmers Sirish Gurung and Miraj Prajapati -- both failed to brake 24 years old national record in 100m freestyle. Ananda Lepcha had set the record of 58.84 second in 1989. Gurung on Thursday clocked 1 minute 0.77 second to complete the distance while Prajapati took 1 minute 2.68 second. Earlier, Gurung had personal best of 1 minute 1 second and Prajapati 1 minute 2.68 second. Among 40 participants of heats, Gurung finished in the 34th position while Prajapati in the 39th. On Tuesday, Gurung had set a national record in 200m freestyle.
