A meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief District Office Durga Prasad Bhandari, who is also the chairman of District Bird-flu Control Technical Committee, decided to restrict flow of poultry products from Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and some other surrounding districts.
Dr Samjhana Kafle, member secretary of the committee, said import of poultry products such as chicks, eggs, chicken and poultry manure via Nala and Sanga area has been banned for a week. [break]
The district has also barred poultry imports through Manedovhan of Lalitpur, Dolalghat of Kavre and Mangalgar of Sindhuli.
“We have imposed complete ban on import of poultry manure to the district. Poultry products coming from the districts except Kathmandu and Bhaktapur will be allowed to enter,” Dr Kafle said, adding, “Suppliers, however, must produce certificate which proves that the poultry products are bird-flu free.”
According to District Livestock Services, around 100 commercial farms and eight hatcheries are in operation in the district. More than 70 percent of the total demand for poultry in the district is fulfilled by supplies from Bhaktapur and Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, local farmers are worried that hatcheries will jack up the price of chicks citing supply deficit following the imposition of the ban.
Technicians have suggested that the farmers adopt bio-security measures including spraying of disinfectant drugs and restricting unchecked movement of people in their farms.
