Kathmandu lifts U-19 cricket title

KATHMANDU, April 13: Kathmandu lifted the title of Wai Wai U-19 Regional Selection Cricket Tournament on Friday defeating Lalitpur by seven wickets.



In the match played at TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, Lalitpur won the toss and opted to bat first. Lalitpur managed to score 166 runs in 30 overs losing five wickets. [break]



Openers Sharad Khadka and Ujjwal Thapa made a good start sharing a 97-run partnership for the first wicket.



Khadka scored 33 runs off 71 balls while Thapa scored 70 runs off 63 balls. Pawan Shrestha was not out on 33 runs off 27 balls while the other batsmen failed to reach the double digit figure.



Bijay Gautam grabbed two wickets while Sunam Gautam and Jagat Chhetri shared a wicket each.



Player-of-the-final Robin Joshi´s unbeaten 51 runs guided Kathmandu to successfully meet the target of 167 runs in 25.2 overs losing three wickets. Despite losing opener Ayush Jung Rana (9), Indra Kamal Manandhar and Sunam Gautam shared a 56-run partnership for the second wicket.



Gautam was back to the pavilion with 39 runs off 28 balls while Manandhar scored 40 runs off 53 balls. Wicketkeeper Joshi faced 38 balls for his half century innings that included five boundaries and two sixes. Bijay Gautam was not out on 17 runs off 23 balls.



Dipendra Shah, Ujjwal Thapa and Sanjay Shah grabbed a wicket each.



Ayush Jung Rana of Kathmandu was adjudged the best batsman of the tournament as he scored 106 runs in three innings. Rajesh Shrestha of Nuwakot received the best bowler award for his 10 wickets haul in three matches. Sharad Khadka of Lalitpur received the player-of-the-series award for his all-round performance during the tournament.
