Karishma shines on second day of National Games

KATHMANDU, April 7: Karishma Karki shines on the second day of the Fifth National Games winning two swimming golds on Tuesday as Surya Maya Rai bagged the first gold of the event in athletics.[break]



The APF athlete clocked 4:46.01 minutes to win the gold in the women’s 1500 m race. Chhaya Khatri of Nepal Police won the silver with a timing of 4:53.00 and Vishow Rupa Budha of Central Region won the bronze with 5:06.72.



Likewise in the men’s 1500 event, Nepal Army claimed gold and silver medals. Hari Rimal clocked 4:02.26 to win the gold and Raj Kumar Bhatta claimed the silver in 4:04.33. Nepal Police’s Rabindra Bhatta was third with a timing 4:05. 83.



Swimming: Four golds for Karishma, record for Chandra



Swimming star Karishma Karki won four gold medals in the first day of the event at the Satdobato Swimming Complex.



Karki won the 200-meter breaststroke gold, finishing in 3:23.01, ahead of Bibhidha Rimal and Sudha Shrestha.



Karki won her second gold in 100-meter butterfly competition, with a timing of 1:26.80. Sudha Shrestha came in second and Shreya Dhital came in third in the event.



Karki also won in 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle. She timed 38.45 sec in 50m backstroke to finish ahead of Shaila Rana and Shreya Dhital whereas finished ahead of Shreya Dhital and Pratikchhya Shrestha in 100m freestyle with a timing of 1 min 12.81 sec.



Meanwhile, Nepal Army swimmers dominated the day in men’s category. Chandra Mahato bettered his own records in 50 m butterfly swimming to claim gold. He clocked 28.43 seconds – 0.10 seconds better than earlier national record. Prasidha Jung Rana and Khil Raj Majhi finished second and third respectively.



Kisim Lal Tharu timed 1 min 19.88 sec in 100m breaststroke for an all army podium finish. Banin Shrestha took the silver and Santa Kumar Rai grabbed the bronze.



Pushpa Raj Shahi added another gold for army in 50m backstroke finishing the distance in 34.46 sec. He was followed by Kisim Lal Tharu and Khil Raj Majhi.



In 200m freestyle, Shailesh Rana won the gold finishing in 2 min 37.29 sec finishing ahead of Khim Bahadur KC and Om Bahadur Kumal.



Weightlifting: Devi sets new record



Nepal Police´s weightlifter Devi Chaudhary set a new national record in the 53kg women´s category.



Chaudhary bagged the gold with a new national record, lifting 132 kg. She lifted 57 kg in the snatch and 75 kg in the clean and jerk. It is a new national record for snatch and clean and jerk too.



She improved on the previous national record of 130 kg set by Niti Shrestha. In the event, Shanti Lama of Parsa won the silver, with a 92 kg lift, and Belti Chaudhary of Kailali won the bronze, with an 80 kg lift.



In the women’s open weightlifting event, Nita Thapa of the Nepal Police won the gold, lifting 110 kg. She lifted 50 kg in the snatch and 60 kg in the jerk to win the gold for the police.



Asha Chaudhary of Kailali district lifted 90 kg (40 kg snatch and 50 kg jerk) for the silver, whereas Kabita Chaudhary of Saptari took the bronze, lifting 87 kg.



In men’s events, Eastern Region’s Hem Shanker Chaudhary lifted 170 kg to win gold in 56 kg category.



Punu Tandukar from the Central Region and Shiv Narayan Chaudhary from the Far Western Region were second and third respectively. Tandukar lifted 162 kg while Chaudhary lifted 160 kg.



In the 62 kg category, Nepal Police and Nepal Army claimed the top positions. Nepal Police’s Bikash Thapa lifted 193 kg to win gold whereas his teammate Laxman Ranjit won silver by lifting 190 kg. Nepal Army’s Raju Lama became third by lifting 176 kg.



ITF Taekwondo: Central Region wins four golds



Sanjay Thapa Darlami of Western Region won gold in the Blue belt category of men’s pattern and Suresh Dhimal of Eastern bagged the silver. In Green Belt, Arjun Tamang of Eastern Region bagged gold ahead of Santa Bahadur Rana of Far Western.



Likewise, in Red Belt, Aamir Maharjan of Central and Keshav Kunwar of Western won the gold and silver respectively. Jhalak Maharjan and Abdul Hamid Khan of Western and Mid Western secured the first and second position respectively in the Black Belt.



Under the second don category, Pappu Kewat of Mid-Western Region and Sanjay Kumar Shrestha of Central Region secured the top two positions respectively. Sri Krishna Bhatta of Far-western took the gold in Yellow Belt as he was the only player under the category.



In Women’s pattern, Yogmaya BK of Mid West and Rita Tamang of Far West won the gold and silver in the Yellow Belt. In Green belt, Sita Rai of Eastern Region won gold and Srijana Chaudhary of Mid Western bagged silver.



Likewise, in Blue Belt, Mamata Thapa of Western Region and Pavitra Adhikari of Eastern Region won the gold and silver respectively. Aarju Karki of Western Region and Malati Tamang of Far Western Region secured the top two positions respectively under the Red Belt category.



Si milarly, in Black Belt Tulasa Rajthala and Srijana Saru of Central and Western Region won the gold and silver respectively.



In Men’s spiring under 76-80 kg category, Prakash Gharti Magar of Mid Western and Rabi Deula of Central bagged the gold and silver respectively. Dhruba Bhatta of Far West was satisfied with bronze.



In women’s spiring under 40-45 kg, Tulasi Thapa Magar of Central bagged the gold and Aarju Karki of Western clinched the silver. In 46-60 kg, Srijana Rai of Central Region grabbed the gold and Jyoti Shahi from the Far West bagged silver.



Karate: Central takes team kata



Parsuram Bastola of Central Region won the gold in men’s single kata of karate finshing ahead of Nepal Police’s Ganesh Thing. In women’s single kata, Suvadra Shrestha of Nepal Police and Susmita Niraula of Eastern clinched the gold and silver respectively.



Likewise, in team kata, Central bagged the gold finishing ahead of Eastern. Nepal Police and Mid Western have to be satisfied with bronze.



Judo: Central takes four



In men’s 45 kg category, Taj Bahadu Taj Bahadur Budhathoki of Mid-Western bagged gold. Nepal Army’s Kumar Bista took silver whereas Keshav Kumar of Eastern and Suresh Chand of Far-Western won bronze.



In men’s 66 kg, Central’s Ramesh Magar won gold, Dev Raj Budhamagar won silver, and Nepal Army’s Shiva Adhikary and Nepal Police’s Prakash Nepali took away bronze.



In 81 kg, Karan Bahadur Bam of Central won gold, Nepal Police’s Shri Ram Makaju won silver and Mid-Western’s Raju Shrestha and Uttam Pratap Rana won bronze.



In 40 kg category women’s judo, Anita Wade of Central won gold, Sunita Gurung of Mid-Western won silver and Mina Rai of Eastern and Ishwori Kumari Bam of Far-Western claimed bronze.



In 57 kg, Central’s Ranju Rai won Gold, Kabita Pun of Mid-Western claimed silver and Sarmila Giri of Far-Western and Pramila Khadka of Nepal Police took bronze medal.



Football: APF thrashes PLA Sports Club



Armed Police Force (APF) defeated the People’s Liberation Army Sport s Club (PLA) 3-0 in the women’s football match whereas Nepal Police outplayed Western Region 8-0 in men’s.



Cricket



Region No. 1Biratnagar beat Region No. 5 Nepalgunj by 70 runs in the ongoing Springwood Senior National Cricket Tournament league match played at the Kirtipur Cricket Ground on Tuesday. Batting first after winning the toss, Biratnagar accumulated 162 runs in 43 overs losing all its wickets. Skipper Manjeet Shrestha top scored with 29 runs and Kundan Singh also contributed 27 runs. Shahi Riza took 4 wickets for Nepalgunj.



Chasing the target, Nepalgunj was bundled out for 92 runs in the 33rd over. Opener Mahesh Chhetri scored 21 runs for Nepalgunj. Man-of-the-match Kundan Singh took match-winning 3 wickets.



In women’s T-20 match, played at Birendra Sainik Ground, Bhaktapur, Region No. 5 Nepalgunj beat Region No. 4 Bhairahawa by 6 wickets. Nepalgunj invited Bhairahawa to bat first after winning the toss. Bhairahawa scored 83 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. Skipper Nitu Thapa was the topscorer with 17 runs.



Nepalgunj achieved the target in just 12 overs. Player-of-the-match Nary Thapa scored 19 runs.



In another match, Region No. 6 Baitadi beat Region No. 2 Birgunj by 70 runs. Electing to bat first, Baitadi scored 133 runs losing 5 wickets. Maya Rawat scored 23 runs for Baitadi. Birgunj was bundled out for 63 runs in the 19th over with extras contributing 35 runs to the total. Sonu Khadka of Baitadi was adjudged player of the match for her all-round performance, taking 2 wickets and scoring 13 runs.
