KATHMANDU, Dec 28: The management of Kantipur Publications has agreed to meet the legitimate demands of workers.

The Kantipur management said this to Minister for Information and Communication Krishna Bahadur Mahara Sunday after second round of talks between the minister and Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) was halted to seek Kantipur´s opinion on this matter.

Second round of talks between the miniter and FNJ had started at 8 a.m. Sunday.

The talks focused on ensuring safety to the press, and ending the seize of Kantipur Publications in Biratnagar.

The FNJ team has said that it would continue protests until there is credible assurance for the safety of the press, and Kantipur and The Kathmandu Post dailies are allowed to resume publication from Biratnagar.

The talks were held at Ministry of Information and Communications. Other demands FNJ is pressing for are action against those involved in Himalmedia attack, and guarantee of press freedom.

Journalists and media houses have come under increasing attacks of late, mainly by people allegedly affiliated with CPN (Maoist) labor union.

FNJ General Secretary Poshan KC said that the FNJ would also demand action against more assailants involved in the Himalmedia attack, since only two of the main accused have surrendered so far -- Ramesh Babu Panta and Ramesh KC. Himalmedia editors said there were at least 50 attackers that beat up journalists and staffers and vandalized office last Sunday (Dec 21).

The last talks held on Thursday morning were inconclusive after Mahara sought time for more homework.
