SOLUKHUMBU: The Kangeldanda Airport in Solukhumbu, which was also being used as an alternative to the Phaplu Airport, will remain closed for the past two months. The airport administration informed that the airport would remain closed till August 31 due to bad weather conditions. [break]

The airport was being used after the Phaplu Airport was closed for maintenance of the runway. The locals of the district have been facing difficulty travelling outside the district as road transport is risky during the rainy season. In addition, public vehicles overcharge the passengers taking advantage of the situation. Usually passenger vehicles charge Rs 2,000 rupees per passenger from Solukhumbu to Kathmandu. But the passenger vehicles have currently been charging up to Rs 5,000 per person. “Road transportation is riskier in this part of the country during the rainy season,” said Phurba Sherpa of Phaplu Transportation Entrepreneurs committee.
