Kamlaris' strike affects life in five districts

DANG, April 16: The first day of the two day strike called by organizations working for the welfare of Kamalaris affected normal life in five districts in western part of the country.



The organizations advocating for the rights of Kamlaris, who worked as bonded laborers before the system was abolished in 2002, had enforced the strike protesting the murder of a girl, who worked as a domestic help in Lalitpur. [break]



The organizations have claimed that Srijana Chaudhari, 12, of Lalmatiya in Dang was murdered on March 27 and have demanded that those involved in her murder be brought to book. The first day of the strike on Tuesday affected normal life in Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur.



Srijana, who worked as a domestic help in the house of engineer Yubaraj Sharma in Chakupati Lalitpur for two years, was found burnt to death in Sharma´s house.



The rights organizations have also registered a complaint with the police demanding action against Sharma, Srijana´s father Gangu Tharu, Parbati Chaudhari as well as Parbati Giri and Lal Mani Sharma who had abetted in sending the girl to work at Sharma´s house.
