KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Jog Mehar Shrestha, the vice chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, passed away on Saturday morning. He was 84. He was suffering from kidney ailment and was being treated at B & B Hospital. "Both his kidneys had failed," Khem Raj Pandit, an RPP leader, said.



Shrestha had become minister for several times in Panchayat-era governments. He was minister for home affairs and land reform in 1972, minister for law, justice, education and communication in 1975, minister for law and justice in 1977, minister for home and panchayat in 1979, minister for physical planning and works in 1979 and minister for panchayat and local development in 1983. He was minister for land reforms in Deuba-led government in 2002 as well.



Shrestha had served as treasurer in the RPP immediately after it was formed after restoration of multiparty democracy in 1990. In 1993, he was elected vice chairman of the party. After that he always remained in the party´s top executive body.
